Here are the latest responses from Tony to your questions.
Questions/Answers:
How does Tony see the role of the fan changing in the next 5 years?
In the 80's we bought merchandise and tickets to shows, in the late 90's
we developed fan sites on the Net, and now the artists have their own
street teams doing local promotion and all the above. Where are we as
fans headed?
Hopefully not into the full blown virtual reality humanity through
the computer. The music thief will continue to steal until a correct
business model is created that charges people via their phone bills for
thievery passes by congress under the copywrite protection act, and the
record companies will need more comprehensive ideas regarding business
models to people who like downloading material, and hopefully to as
place that allows more talented people a career that allows them the
things that matter in life like family-and a decent future.
At the Houston show you wore a shirt with George Bush on it, but I
couldn't see what it said. Stephan talked about the country being too
conservative before SCL. What's your/the band's take on politics.
If you follow the money you find many answers to political
quagmires, The world has been inter twined in a holy war for centuries
and this latest one is merely designed to fear out people into giving up
the freedoms of the United States constitution, which to me is not ok.
The tv- which is owned by the few multi rich who spoon fed the news to
us, is inundated us with fear and pass the Patriot act is the first of
many steps designed and taking away freedoms many valiant men died to
protect, to make a New World Order- a totalitarian state- with a few
rulers and also of minions. Many starving poor people, who are children
who are forced to live out the balance of the bloated lifestyles most
Americans take for granted. Look, we have raped the middle east for oil
for a long time for our SUV'S, and the Palestinians have been forced in
a corner for far too long. That's where we should maintain our focus,
and there would be less hate toward us. We put the tanks in the hands of
Israel, with that in mind how else can the muslims defend their
homeland. The whole situation is a mess and one that holds in it the
fate of humankind. Send love out from you to the ones you disagree with
and it will always triumph over evil, and that's what we must do, new
protests have turned into hate rallies with corporate logo's, which to
me only strengthens more hatred and their cause. Teach forgiveness and
love around you, and value freedom, treasure it, it is what makes
America great, I could go on for hours.
Also, what pickups do you use?
Many different kinds from old P90 single pick ups to newer ones, I
don't keep track, my tech puts many different ones in and I say ya or
nay.
What does your live rig consist of (effects wise ... ?) I saw the
Marshall cabinets but I didn't see the amps.
Most of the amps onstage are dummy's. I use a modified Vox ac30
with greenback speakers in it, a vintage fender Twin for clean- and
Bogner Extasy for heavy. The amps onstage are just cabs. most cabs are in boxes to eliminate
the outside noise and to allow the mixer more separation, and less bleed from the
amps in the vocal mics and drum mics. The which supposedly makes SJ
sing better, though I personally tend to sing better the old fashioned
way, with amps and floor monitors, I have a loud voice which tends to
drown out all the other instruments in my head when I sing which makes
it really hard to really hear pitches.
All I can think about right now is food. So what is your favorite
when your hungry?
Nuts of any kind
Tony, thanks again for doing this. For Invisible when it appears on
your solo cd, will it be the original MA lyrics or will it be the ones
you and stephan wrote?
OG Majik Alex lyrics, I like them better, but I may rewrite then parts
of the songs that I didn't write and make them less lite and more rocKIN,
I AM NOT SURE IF IT WILL GO ON MY ALBUM OR NOT
great show at the grenada theatre in dallas last night. that was my
first 3eb show and it satisfied the craving i've had to see you guys for
years. you should really work louisiana into your tour. anyway, you came
to speak to a few "pass-less" fans after the show (one of
which was myself) and i just thought that was a great thing. i have
tremendous respect for any artist who goes out of their way to make
contact with their fans and i think that's what sets you apart from the
rest of the band. i'm looking forward to the solo album. have a great
tour.
Thanks for that cool review, some reviewer in Dallaas really ripped into
mr being "not animated" which seems to be the last think I
would call my self. I love the fans and never like to let them down.
what is tony's favorite song on out of the vein? Why does he like
that song? Also what's his favorite song to play live? why?
Hit and Run- the guitars are totally singing together. The Background-
cuz the lyrics are magical.
Just wanted to say that we enjoyed your show in Austin, Texas this
past week end. We had the opportunity to met and talk with Chris. What a
cool guy. It was an honor to meet him. If we ever go to Las Vegas we'll
be sure to drop in to see the automatic taxi star.
Chris is great, and he is a great addition to our sound
You guys rocked in dallas, i was wondering what you guys did while
the power went out in the venue? You were hilarious on stage and your
playing was awesome, rock on, Tony!
Thanks a lot, I got a shitty review for some reason, all I remember
was that I was having fun, and that's and that's all that really matters.
Hey Tony, this is someone who you probably wont remember, but I
finally got you guys to play I WANT YOU for me in Nashville, TN. It was
so awesome! I have been to four of 3EB's shows on your tour. If I had
the money I would have been with you guys through the whole tour. I met
u all in Toledo, Ohio for the first time. And then in North Carolina
(twice) and now in Nashville. Every show that I have been to has been
the best in its own way. I have to say that the last one in Nashville,
was by far the most meaningful to me. If there is any way that you could
let everyone else know that they rocked in Nashville I would greatly
appreciate it. Tell Stephan thanks SO MUCH for finally playing I WANT
YOU. It was probably the best moment of my life thus far. I cant wait to
see you again in St. Louis! Third Eye Blind has always been my fav band
since I heard the first album. I know that you were not with the
original band but you kick ass! Chris said he would get me back stage
passes, but if not hopefully I will see you after the concert anyway. I
know that with the tour you are really busy and you have someone else
read this shit, but it would be cool just to have you recognize me in
St. Louis! You rock Tony, keep it up!
I'm glad you were having fun Nashville is a great place to hang,
people appreciate music and vis versa cheers
Amazing performance during the Good Morning America Concert series. I
was the dude you shook hands with and you signed my grey Third Eye Blind
shirt after the performance. I am contacting you to see if you could
help a hardcore fan out and see you guys rock the China Club in NYC. I
have 5 people trying to get through the phone lines to win tickets
through 95.5 but I haven't had any luck.
Thanks for the compliments on the show. I am a perfectionist who
hates using- in ear monitors-, But SJ does and I GET OVERRULED which
tends sometimes to make me sing sharp a little, one day I hope to
get back to good floor monitors with amplifiers onstage instead of in
boxes six miles away.
Hey Tony, I'm one of the trusty Scottish fans who hasn't yet
witnessed 3eb's greatness, i'll be visiting the states in September,
what will 3eb be up to then? will i catch anything? thanks dude, keep up
the great work cus u rock!
I hope so, our singer does a good Scottish accent that hope fully
make you smile.
I will be attending the MLB all-star game in Chicago next month, and
i hear you guys will be in town for that. I was wondering if you will be
performing for the crowd before the game, or if it was just some kind of
small private party. If it isn't for the crowd at the game, and it isn't
private, is there any way i could see you guys play? I met you at Flint,
Michigan back in April, but I would love to see you again here in
Chicago. Thanks a bunch Tony.
I am not sure if it's before or after the game. When I get there
they tell me. I think it happens before the show, but don't take my word
for it, I am not the on with the answers, but I can rip a mean solo, so
during the beginning the beginning of jumper solo yell Tony Tony so I
can see you and lets have a special Zeus moment. Rock forever 3eb
First: How much effect did Kevin's alternate tunings on songs, and
then you having to play them hundreds of times have on your writing for
the new record (most of your old stuff sounds in standard).
Kevin's standard tunings had a bit of effect on the music , but I had
been fiddling with them before. I am a fan of Michael Hedges, and Jeff
Buckley, who both dabbled in alt tunings to say the least. Ithink his
best ones were Losing a whole year and Darkness. I like ones that sound
completely terrible when played open.
Second: I've been in a band for about a year now and at times it
often seems like we're going nowhere. We're located in a fairly big city
in South Carolina (Charleston), but there's not exactly a lot of record
company offices near the area. Any suggestions on how to get some label
attention?
Write words and make music that means something to you, the other shit
will come in time. Believe in your self, self realize. Dream it write it
down, a million times be meticulous, listen, smell the flowers, have
funfunfunfunfun.
Who would you say are you the closest to and why?
Arion- cuz we have a similar sense of humor, but all of us have our
moments.
I love the website and I have a question that I'd like to ask
Tony...If he wasn't in 3eb, what would he see himself doing?
Psychologist- being a better Father, instead of an absentee Father.
I'm 47. One of the reasons i'm such a huge 3eb fan, is the fact that
they remind me so much of the 60's bands. Some of the tunes are
downright beateley. [60's term for sounding a little like the beatles]
how's it gonna be reminds me of the stones. Does anyone else say that,
or is it just me?
Everyone in our band idolizes the Who, Stones, and Arion and I are
Beatles freaks
First of all, do you know where I can purchase a Majik Alex CD? And
secondly, if I wanted to send Tony a letter, what would be the best way
to go about doing that?
You Are sending me a letter. I am sure you can download the music
through my website for Majik Alex.
First off let me just tell you how truly awesome it is that you take
questions from fans, that is going above and beyond the call of duty. So
first off, I noticed you said you have an interest in classical guitar
playing and i was wondering what type of style to play and if that
material was going to be included on the solo album?
I am interested in many different periods of classical music.I
also am not pinned down to any one particular period of classical music,
and answer to second question it will rock.
And my second question is how do you construct your solos? Is it by
taking a specific scale shape or do you play off of intuition? In other
words are they planned out or are they on the spot? and as one classical
guitar fan to another i suggest you check out www.delcastillomusic.com,
these guys are amazing.
I try to sing the parts or hum them while they they are happening,
not by scale or something, I try and listen to the vocal or another
instrument to get the flow.
Where do I begin? First, I want to commend you on how cool you are! I
don't think I can name one rock star that is in touch with his fans like
you are! It shows what a great person you are. Second- I was at the
Dallas show, I was the first person in line. You signed my self titled
record afterwards. I got some cool pics of you that look like your
stoned. I recorded Extra for the 3EB segment. On the scene where you
were about to snatch that guy's glasses (which I laughed at histerically
for awhile and I can't seem to figure out why) - is that for the Blinded
video? Also, do you know when that will be airing? I'm really looking
forward to seeing you guys again next time you hit Dallas. Please come
back!!!
After a show the high that the show creates is like being stoned, I did
this last tour pretty clean, and yes that was the blinded vid, with me
pulling off Mick Rock's glasses.
First off, I was curious if you could recommend a good place in Cali
to buy Gibson acoustic gear from. I wanted to hookup with either a J-45
or J-50 with the active pickup in it.
I live in Vegas my friend- there I find all I need at Cowtown Guitars
it rocks.
Secondly, I was wondering if the bands studio would ever become
available for people to use for their own recordings. I like the sound
off the new album, and it would be awesome if musicians such as myself,
could book hours for recording there! Thank you very much, and have a
great day man!
Our studio is being used by other well known bands, right now I believe
either Arion is recording solo shit or Vanessa C is in there with SJ.
What do you think about Eddie Van Halen (you and him are both my
guitar gods...damn hes good!)
a TRUE INSPIRATION OF GENIUS ON THE GUITAR THE BEST SINCE Hendrix.
i live in Lake Charles, LA, about 3 hours east of Houston and 3 hours
west of New Orleans. Its not a big city but we have plenty of ppl.
Anyways, ever since i heard you guys got a new CD out i just new the
tours would start up. But my parents are too lazy to take me anywhere
far away just for a concert and only my girlfriend understands your
music like i do (i guess everyone else is too simple). I was wondering
if you could have a concert down here. Geez i feel like an idiot asking
that, cause i mean, im talking to a Rock Star! Heh, well, after reading
all the answered posts i cant help but feel like you're an actual caring
person. So do you think that a concert here could happen?
I would do anything for the fans, but it's a booking agent question.
I would do ANYTHING to get like the tabs for your songs...is there a
way i could?? im not that good at guitar, but im good enough to see how
to play it and do it :) 4.)What would i have to do to get my guitar
autographed by you and the band? or just you? lol (i just bought it
brand new...its an Epiphone VintageG-400WB guitar) i know, far-fetched
but i would do anything to have it.
I think someone should tab them. I have laid out the real tunings, it
can't be that hard from there.
When will you guys be playing in the bay area? You guys haven't hit
your "hometown" yet.
It's up to SJ and AS THAT'S THEIR HOMETOWN.
hey tony, i met you after the show in houston on jun 13th, thanks for
taking the time to talk to everyone. It was definitely a great show.
Just a question, during one of the early songs on the set, I think
blinded, you held the guitar up to your face and it appeared like you
were playing with your teeth. What were you doing and how did you do
that?
During a part of the song anything I pick with my teeth. It's
something I learned as a lad from videos of Jimi Hendrix, it's fun to
do.
yo tony, you're a rockin guitar player. i was listening to your old
apocrypha stuff, and the soloing is just completely insane, do you ever
play that kind of stuff anymore when your just practicing or sitting
around or whatever?
It's like speed marathon running, ya have to build back up to it, I
probably could if my heart was in it. Right now I'm just experimenting
with other parts of creativity.
Do you know the name of Kevins band? Can i get info on your solo
album dealy? If anyone else in 3eb asks, tell them that it is true that
i am supporting the 3eb Cover CD. Im also in a band (i play lead guitar)
People have said we sound like a mix of the Beatles, the Kinks, and i
think with 3eb style maybe. Our Style is so weird with that combo that
its a new genre, Circus Rock. I can give you some pointers cuz heck, im
the man.(i wish) Thanks for inspiring me. Rock N Roll
I don't know kevins bands name, I'm working on some songs for fun.
Right on I hope the cover cd thing takes shape soon.
Hi Tony, hope you're doing well and that the tour hasn't worn you out
yet. I met you while you guys played in austin, I was one of the girls
waiting outside the radio station, the one with smooth legs. Anyway, i
didn't really get a chance to talk to you much because i was pretty much
in shock throughout the whole experience. I recently started playing
acoustic guitar and I wanted to ask you which strings do you prefer,
nylon or steel and why?
I was extremely worn out by the end there, I am still feeling the
aftershocks. Thanks for caring.
For the sake of brevity, my primary concern is in a question that you
may or may not know the answer to. While the band is touring, why oh WHY
aren't there any shows in Oregon or Washington? I remember seeing
something about a tentative show in Seattle, and I was SO going to drive
8 hours to get there... what happened? Are you guys going to share your
beauty with the NorthWest sometime in the near future? I've never been
to a show before, and feel that it is something I need to do for myself
before I no longer have the chance to do so. I have a great desire to
see you guys in person after feeling for so long that you've had such a
great influence on my life. I've often said Stephan has saved my life
more times than he'll ever know, even if he doesn't know my life exists.
And I am so greatful that there is a band that can portray those words
so perfectly and make them touch me so deeply. Third Eye Blind is my
spark in the darkness; my inspiration.
In the fall we will tour these areas. I don't route tours I just
play guitar.
Hey, Tone, I would just like to say that you are amazing. My question
is this: You talk about sacraments, you have a cross tattoo, and
whatnot. Are you more of a religious church-going kind of guy or do you
do the Buddhist inner-peace thing? How important is spirituality to you?
I'm a bit of a melting pot of new age-christianity symbolism-zen. I'm
a kooky one but love is the key to everything.
hey Tony, first off, thanks for taking the time to answer these
questions. I have been a fan of 3EB since the self titled album. The
only band I like even closely as much as you guys is Def Leppard (who are
still touring today and deserve more credit). I totally dont mean any
dis-respect or a put down, but I personally have found that I like the
albums from best to worst in the order they came out. I love the first
album the best, Blue was great but had a few songs that I was like, is
this 3EB (Camoflage,Red Summer Sun)? N now with OOTV, there are only
about 5 or 6 songs that I really care for on the whole album. I know
most bands always say "this is our best album to date" but in
your case since its the first full album you've done with 3EB, what do
you think of OOTV compared to the first two albums as a band member point
of view (since u did write sum stuff for the self titled album) and also
from a fan point of view? N then as a quick side question, did you ever
meet Kevin Cadogan/what do you think of him if you did? Thanks for
taking the time outta ur busy schedule to do this, your awesome.
What inspires Stephan to do his thing is what makes 3eb. Personally I
like this album much better than blue. The self titled was great, but
there were also a few on there I could do without as well. We agree to
disagree. The album is a work of art. Best to you. I did write some
guitar parts on a few songs on self titled. There are things about the
album I would have not done. If you aren't feeling Forget Myself-Palm
Reader-Blinded- these are 3eb classics. I did not care for self
righteous, but everyone is entitled to an opinion, so rock on.
after reading some of your answers to the previous questions posted,
i just wanted to comment on the one requesting the background being
played at the kansas city show. that email was from my best friend and
love, which i only discovered upon reading it. although you didn't play
the song, i too want to thank you for the incredible impact that this
music has had on my life as well, and a thanks to my bud for introducing
me to something that i can't believe i had been missing out on. as you
say that we are vital to you as a band, you are vital as an
incorporation to the soundtrack of my life. thank you so much. to close,
the kc show was amazing and i was in the front communicating with you
all the whole time, and unfortunately didn't get to meet you after the
show. but thank you for an awesome experience! peace and love. . .
I would play it every night and convinced SJ to bring it back into
the set. I don't get to make the set lists though.
I notice that the setlists mostly consist of songs from the S/T album
and OOTV. I personally miss hearing Darkness live. I was wondering if
there are any songs off of Blue that you would like to reintroduce into
the setlists. By the way, has My Time In Exile ever been played live?
I feel pretty good about the set list when Background is in there.
Blue is my least fav album.
Hey Tony I was stoked when I was down in St. Louis and heard Stephan
said you guys were playing in the parking lot at U.S. Cellular Field for
the Allstar Game in Chicago, especially since you haven't been to
Chicago for a long time. But after contacting major league baseball, the
Chicago white sox, and marti@egminc.com I was informed the show is
unfortunately a private show. I know this is a long shot, but is there
anyway possible to score a ticket or two to that event? If that's not
possible hopefully you can tell me the location in the parking lot and
time of the show cuz I still plan on showing up and trying to get in,
even though I may not have a ticket. Thanks for taking the time to read
this email and when your solo album comes out please don't neglect
Chicago; although I still travel if need be to hear you perform it live.
Thanks again.
I don't know this offhand, but I luv ya anyway.
I was at the recent St. Louis show and it rocked. The Narcolepsy
version was amazing! It was probably the best show I've seen to date.
You were definitely the most receptive to the kids out by the bus after
the show...and you have no idea the impact that has on your fans. So,
thanks for showing love, I definitely respect you for that. My question
is about Crystal Baller. What the hell do you sing for background vocs in
the last couple chorus's. I have tried and tried to figure it
out...please help!
Some get it some must wait some get it some must wait awhile some get
it.
I went to the Orlando, FL show at the hard rock live, and you guys
completely blew me away. The show was awesome. I just wanted to let you
know how much of an inspiration you are to me. Because of you I started
playing guitar and getting heavy into music. --my question is, what was
your inspiration to start playing guitar, and pursue it untill you got as
good as you are? You completely rock, and I love ya to death! Thanks!
I wanted to be like my dad who is a extremely talented
musician/artist. He surrounded our family with music.
Hey Tony, I've seen you guys live about 3 times now, and to me it
just gets better everytime. but i have been reading a lot of stuff about
the break between kevin and 3eb and i get this impression that (even
though I love him) stephan is a dick. I just hope you, brad, and arion
are taken care of. you guys rock!!! out of the vein has it's
moments...and i agree with you that stephan overflowed company with too
many damn vocals, and that can't get away from you sounds dumb with all
the bop, bop, bopin' and that goofy rap outro. if you ever want to join
a rock band where you can have more freedom, i'm always looking for a
great lead guitarist. and self-righteous could have been cool without
her vocals.........sounds like a lil boy........and wake for young souls
just isn't working for me....but other than that the record is a classic
along with the first two. and the guitars on my hit and run are
genius!!!
I agree with much of what you said regarding the album, however
regarding SJ, he is a great poet, I like being creative with him, and I
owe him some of my vurrent financial blessings, so peace and love to all
my brothers no matter what. I believe in forgiveness- lovewins vs hate.
Everyone has some shit on their shoes, but thanks for caring
What do you think the current state of the band is right now? What is
everyone feeling right now? I know the sales of the album aren't super
great right now, and that's a shame because you guys poured your heart
and soul on it, and it really shows, it's an amazing album! What are you
guys looking forward to in the next few months, with another fall tour
and etc. Is there anyone specifically you would like to see as being on
tour with you guys? The blinded video was awesome as well, great work on
that as well! Keep rockin' out!
It will come correct next with vid then single and then tour. I
choose positivity. I am not a negative person. I count my blessings. We
have fans, there are a lot of thieves though and a lot of artists buying
for the same spots.
First I want to say that you are an awesome guitarist...and that both
times that I've seen you live (once at the show at the university of
Maryland, Baltimore County show and another time at the DC 101 chili
cook off) you rocked! I cant wait to see you again at the 9:30 club.
Anyway...to my question...If you had to be stuck on a desert
island...which one of your bandmates would you most like to be stuck
with and why?
Arion, cuz we laugh a lot together.
saw you guys back in Indy a while back. i wasn't in the VIP section,
but you came over, and signed an autograph for my friend (and other
guitarist in my band) who was away in italy, and couldn't make it to the
show. you then took it and had it signed by the rest of the band!! don't
know if you remember this at all or not, but know that it made his day,
week, month, and possibly year when i gave it to him. many many thanks.
You are appreciated from the heart.
It's Tina Weber from Vegas, Valley High. I just heard that Tony is
officially a rock star! Let him know that I congratulate him on making
it to the front of a stage. He always was a super talented guy! Oh, and
his hair looks so good. I'm glad to see he took the scissor
plunge..........now about that highlighting....kidding <smirk>. I
hope he is happy and shining away as a superstar. If he wants to
know/remembers me... I'm still an artist, currently taking it easy and
trying to get a gallery show in Seattle within the next year. I was
doing art department work for film and TV (worked for MTV a few times)
but now I'm back to my own personal thing. Livin La Vida Loca. Ask him
if he kept in touch with Mitch, Ahrue and that whole crew. I have Ramona
Chemielewski, Lori Fetzer (now Lori Guild) and Jeff Crawford here in
Seattle with me but I'd love to know where everyone else in the Vegas
scene scattered to.
Hello Tina, yes I have been playing guitar with Third Eye Blind for 4
years now, tell everyone wuz up. I know that Mitch and Ahrue were up to
some projects, and that rocks. Take care.
what is your favorite song to play, how is it traveling on the road,
are you planning on adding any more tour dates or TV appearances, and
what is your relationship with the rest of the band?
Were like army buddies. Yes TV 2 more singles. Probably Crystal
Baller, and Forget Myself and a fqall tour as well as an EP.

Sorry
it took so long to get these answers posted...but they're here now!
Questions/Answers:
which do u like more: kickass soloing or just pure jammin
out?
Jamming out.
I don't know if you will get this in time, but you guys are coming to
Houston's Verizon Wireless Theater this Friday the 13th. I'm soooo
excited and I guarentee that I will be front row! My best friend
and I will have shirts that say Misfits on the front and a big
sign! Anyways, we would both LOVE to hear The
Background! More than anything we wanna hear MDB (it's kinda
"our song"). If there is any way you can make that
happen I would just kiss you to pieces!!! You guys seriously rock
my world! I love you to death!!!!!! Thanks!
We did Backround, and I loved the Misfits shirts.
hey Tony, how's it going? There was talk on TVCY board a little while
ago about organizing some kind of private 3eb show exclusively for us
internet fans. We would take up responsibility for the planning,
organization and execution of the entire event...all you guys would have
to do is show up ;) However, the money issue came up and we kind of hit
a speed bump. My question is: would you guys be willing to make it a
free show for us fans and if not, how much money would it cost us
in total to get you guys to come? Thanks for your time, you rock!
Must talk WITH marti@egminc.com-
do not flood her with unnecessary mail just one with your particular
idea . Tone
Hey Tony -- you are officially my favorite rock star in the world -- I
got a chance to meet you and stuff at the Hartford show on 4/19 and I
wanted to thank you for recording my voicemail message for me... also I
was wondering, my sister wanted to give you a shirt with her favorite
monkey on it (Paul Frank's Julius).. would you wear it when you play at
the radio festival in Hartford on July 4th? (If we get a chance to meet
you before the show)? You can email your response to justjoey316@aol.com
if you don't wanna post it on the site -- keep up the awesome work!
I’m GLAD THE MESSAGE WORKED FOR YOU, I APPRECIATE ALL GIFTS, BUT for
everyone I AM NOT REALLY THE Monkey man anymore, it was sorta short
lived nickname, but rock on.
Hey Tony, what you're doing here is great, my hat certanly goes off to
you, I know of no other member of any band that is this good about
responding. Now, in an earlier post you mentioned wanting to sit
down with Lee Harvey Oswald, as a Kennedy enthusiast, I was just
wondering why. (We all know he didn't do it by the way-"Back and to
the left".
If you know who was working for Zapata offshore
before the Kennedy assassination, and know much about the knights
templar, you should know not to be at home any major holiday.
Hey Tony. I think its cool that you pushed for the background to be
played live. Its an awesome song with a great outro and i hope you guys
work it in every night. You said that you played it on your classical
guitar, which brings my question. When learning how to play some of the
old songs that werent played on the last tours, or when you first got
back into the band, do you just learn by ear, does Stephan or Arion
teach you? sort of a stupid
question, but kinda curious.
For the most part It’s easy to figure out these songs, I don’t
require Stephan or Arions help cuz at first I was interpreting other
peoples parts my own way to keep close to the original as played be me,
Some songs like semi- and Mororcycle- I remembered from when I was first
in the band. Most parts that I didn’t write, are not as challanging
for me as is it was to get the feel
off each part to be right.
I have been to 2 shows since you joined the band, and seen tons on TV.
Your best performance ever, I must say, was the DC101 Chili Cookoff on
May 17. I was front row, and I honestly say it was the best day of my
life to date. (Im only 17 so its ok HAHA) Anyway, the question is, when
you played at House of BLues, in vegas, the one for tv, and when u
played blinded and jumper and faster on tv for new years, and a few
other occasions like the view and stuff, i couldnt help but notice that on some, you and stephan and arion werent really playing your
instruments at all, and in vegas there were at least some pre recorded
parts. I was just wondering why this was, and also, I have tabbed out
about half the new album and was wondering if there were anyway you
could look them over and tell me what you think. Thanks so much man, you
rock.
On certain occassions, when the show has a way of doing it that allows
many acts perform live- they have a music track and the vocals are sung
live, not house of blues though, that on e I am confused by.
You do know that my brother Chris is our utility guy who picks up
extra keyboards samples and guitar parts, may be that’s what you were
hearing. Most of the time though it is us playing and singing live at
least 90% of the time, we like it that way, but some shows force all
acts.
Hiya Tony, first of all
thanks for responding to all these random questions, its a great thing
you're doing and you're representing the band very well. I love the
outfits your wear on stage, I was wondering where they come from. Do you
shop for them yourself, are they given to you free from stores, do fans
give them to you or does the wife get your stage clothes?
All of the above.
Pick clothing that fits my mood, sometimes its just something
silly, I like to mess with my hair style a lot for fun, accessories of I
feel something I see, and I get it.
My wife helps too a lot cuz she has a good fashion sense, and I
like her being involved with me. She usually cuts my hair, and does a
Rocklin job I might add. Its not what you wear, but how you wear it.
Hi Tony! Thank you first
of all for being SO great to the fans! I say this, because at 2 recent
concerts in CT, you took the time to greet fans after the show. (They
were at Toad's Place in Hew Haven and Webster Theatre in Hartford.)
My question is: Will "The Background" be included in upcomg
shows as well, especially at the Hartford concert on July 4? I want to
hear it SO bad in concert!
I am doing my best to get it added
as much as possible, I will
try and to remember, but it’s a bit hard for SJ and he tends to opt
out of it, I hope he dosen’t on that night.
It's going to be
difficult for me to keep this e-mail to minimal wording, as in the past
when I've written to the band, I've spent hours trying to perfect
exactly what I want to say. And while I think that your recent
outreach to the fans through this internet communication is worthy of a
much more thoughtful letter from myself, at this point I just wanted to
slip in a little request. I am thrilled to hear that The
Background has been added to the setlist - when I read your thoughts on
the song, I feel exactly the same way. So, because you are
rotating the song with I Want You, I was wondering if I could request
ahead of time that your upcoming show in Kansas City be one of the
nights for The Background. That would mean a lot to me.
Unfortunately, Sj calls the shots, read upper post, it’s a battle.
Anyway, thanks again SO MUCH for your recent outreach. I think
it is amazing, and it's helping me get back in touch with a band that
has been so vitally important to my life over the past six years.
Take care, and more to come from me later
You are vital to us.
When you guys were at Z100 a few weeks ago, Cubby (Bryant) was supposed
to give one of you guys these three poems that I wrote, inspired by
3eb...I was wondering if you got them? If you didn't I can send
them--I'm at vb3eb@hotmail.com --it just would really mean a lot to
me if you were to read them
Email them to paula and I WILL.
What do you wish you could change about the world as it is now?
The middle east.
i would like to
take this time and say ur a very deep and considerate person i was not
tryingto bash you with my kevin questions im sorry.and on the blinded
question about f#maj your right but what about b flat? anyways i love
alternate tunings as well. especialy dsuss2 awesome tuning.if you
wouldent mind writing me back to discuss this kevin thing in depth if
your sick of the ?'s then dont botther with it i know your busy but i
will be seeing you guys in austin.peace
I have no room for hate in my heart
Met you at the ORock press conference Saturday afternoon at the Hard
Rock Live here in Orlando. I just wanted to thank you. I was very impressed that, even though
you were a little under the weather, you made a point to proactively go
around the room and shake hands with the various contest winners.
Both, you and Stephan, were approachable and sincere in the time you
spent with the group, answering questions and signing personal items.
Simply put, it was really cooll
It’s a
mutual respect thing. Our
fans deserve the respect of knowing they feel something that is so
personal to us. It’s a
win win.
What is the pre-show
atmosphere like for the band. Do you keep to yourselves, or is
there much discussion? (Oh yeah, you should have got on top of the
speakers while you had the chance in Pittston, PA)
Sometimes warming up, ariopn has iggy pop jamming on 11,
sometimes, I will warm up on classical guitar, brad warms up his right
hand for therapy. I decided not
to, cuz I don’t have that good of life insurance.
I'm a huge fan from
Florida ( my friends and I drove to Myrtle Beach and Orlando to see you
guys). Do you guys plan on coming to Tampa anytime soon??? These road
trips are killing my budget! Rock on!
I love Tampa.
I wish our touring company CAA SHOULD BOOK IT.
I am actually split 50-50 between 3eb and Kevin’s band.
I have actually met Kevin, Stephan and Arion… so it’s like I
have met the best of both worlds. And
I am opening myself up to you, I think you have got a great sound and
style that I haven’t been around before.
I guess the best thing is to just write this stuff out to you and
have some what of a connection with you from it.
And hopefully one day I can meet you or talk to you, so that I
can know you.
I understand where you are coming from.
There really is no competition to me where music is concerned,
for me as a player as a fan of the other two albums I feel it, and do
appreciate what Kevin did as a one of the two guitar players on the self
titled and one of the three on blue, I believe we have made an album
that is a masterpiece that stands with signature 3eb.
I have not heard a lot of kevin’s music, so I can’t give my
opinion, but I am sure he is having fun making it, and that’s the most
important thing, and I am glad you have a open mind.
Do you already have a label and all the stuff like that picked out for
your solo album?
Is it already officially gonna happen?
Making 7 demos when Stephan
works on Vanessa's album. There’s still a lot of promotion to do for
this 3eb record yet. To come. My Songs
are all written, Don’t wanna say more or jinxs myself
Tony, I have been a huge
fan of the band for several years and i have reciently began running the
programming board for a small liberal arts school. How can a little
school like mine try to book third eye blind to come. We are so excited
about the band to come that we are will to give up much of our
activities through out the year just to get you guys to come. A follow
up question would be if you guys did any benefit concerts and if you
feel that is important for bands to do?
Must email marti@egminc.com
I believe in a benefit, if it’s for a good cause
From a 40 year old rocker who has been going to shows for 25 years -
y'all got it right! Saw the shows in Charlotte, NC back in
April and last Wed. in Myrtle Beach, SC - killer, every aspect. I
won't bore you with the list of classic bands/shows I have seen but
3eb is right up there at the top. Really enjoyed both the shows,
thanks for the good time. 3eb has become a "can't miss ticket"
in my book.
Well thanks for the review, we liked that show, and have been working
hard on making a home for our fans at the shows by creating tight
rocking grooves.
After reading about your career/family decisions from the
earlier days I want to give you a huge shout out of RESPECT! You
did the right thing, man. I made a similar decision as a young
father of two and now have two very bright, well adjusted teens who
turned me on to 3eb! I really applaud your priority as a
husband/father and enjoy the hell out of your music. Thanks for
bringing the Rock back into a Rock Concert!
Thank you for the shout out. It’s hard to be the best father when your gone all the
time, and I spend many nights alone and in tears, but I got this shot
and I owe him the best life and unfortunately money does work into that
equation. I have the worlds
best job, with guys like brothers, and I count my blessings.
Thanks for caring.
Do you think you will play smaller venues as well as large venues in the
fall? You guys were amazing at Toads Place - the epitome of a small
venue in my opinion.
Mostly theaters and sheds.
Is that a pre-recorded track you use while playing Blinded live, with
the part that has the hammer-ons and pull-offs during the verses?
My brother Chris who is sometimes visible, depending on the venue, he is
our musical utility guy who plays some guitar parts as well as keyboards
and samples, the rhythm
part made more sense for me to play leading into the chorus.
We never play to a track at a a gig.
I wanted to first thank you for giving us fans a chance to write to you.
It means a lot to us. My question is - do you personally ever get sick
of talking to the fans? I mean, every stop on the tour you probably
start to hear the same things and I'm wondering if it ever wears on you
or if you ever get annoyed by the constant fan presence?
It’s hard to get to everyone and give each equal access. Although I try.
Also - just as a quick side note - I wanted to tell you that when the
band played at the University of Connecticut in the spring of 2000, I
met alex glynn (who asked us where the nearest dunkin donuts was) and
told her that I had slept out for 4 days to get front row seats. Anyway,
not to bore you, she promised myself and 2 friends back stage meet and
greets, which ended up falling through. Any chance that on your next
visit to New England I could somehow catch up?
Sure email
hook it up, and you will be cool. James@egminc.com
tell him your story with Alex’s name and tell him Rod Gizinya said
Regardless of the answer (I know that was greedy, I'm sorry). You
totally have smashed the rock star image that was floating in my head.
thank you for being a caring person and what seems like a genuinely nice
guy.
Ego driven rock stars are cheese.
When 3eb played in hartford ct at the webster theater, in the
within arms reach tour a few weeks ago, me and some friends met you in
line and we all thought very highly of you, i even offered you a cheez-it,
do you always interact with fans like you did in harftord? Also,
when is 3eb coming back to CT?
I love our fans, anyone connected to this music really is of deep
intellect. The music is
made for people with creativity in them, that’s why you like it.
About Slow Motion on the EP: Will it be the same original version that
was supposed to be on Blue, or do you guys have plans to re-record the
song?
I don’t know, must ask SJ.
First, what was that guitar riff on the cd where you were just playing
it facing stephan, right before it cut into you playing in the studio? I
LOVED that, the best sound on the DVD. Will that be used? I'd love to
figure out how to play that.
Also, I don't know if you heard of this, but Greenday let some people on
stage and play their instruments during a concert a couple years ago
(Not So Slient Night in sf, actually). Would you guys ever do that, or
would that be a serious pain? By the way, The Used is awesome. I go to
the high school they each went to.
I think it was an idea for CGAFY that didn't make it . I Like the
Greenday idea, I also like the idea of bandmembers switching of
instruments during songs. As far as the Used, the best album from last year,
ootv my choice for this year.
do
you guys ever listen to demos given to you?
Most of the time
one of us does.
do you use the tubes that come with your Marshall's, or do you replace
them, if you replace them, what tubes do you use?
I like the 6l6
do
you generate your distortions through the amp itself, or do you use
pedals or POD equipment? if so what do you use?
Always natural
distortion through the amp in 3eb
what kind of strings do you use?
Dean markleys 12
I've always wondered this.... How do you get that sound from Never Let
You Go? Not the intro chords..The one I mean is the funky bend riff with
lots of screaming treble. What effect is that? Also, your improv intro
to Wounded with that PRS hollowbody is amazing. Lastly, your use of
harmonics and classic rock (not pop) on OOTV is really creating your own
signature in 3EB.
I believe Arion used a special cigarette box tone amp.
You must ask him.
What's up Tony, Saw you in
Pompano, FL this passed Friday, June 6!
My husband and I were the ones with the glowsticks in front of
you. You rocked! Didn't
catch a pic :( , I guess we weren't as close as we had imagined.
My question is if you guys are coming back to South Florida later
on? Also, how do you deal
with being on the road and away from your family?
We left the concert thinking how hard it must be to be in a band-
Away from family and friends, playing the some of the same songs
everyday, the traveling, playing in front of so many people.... I don't
think I would be able to handle it, it must be rough, how do you handle
it?
Try to stay clean, and get sleep, as much as you can.
Glow sticks rock
I was at the 3eb show at the hard
rock live in orlando, FL, and you borrowed my mirrored sunglasses to
wear on stage... I just wanted to say that you were hilarious.
I've never seen the band live before so that was amazing and then
watching you rock it out on stage was so much fun.
It was great getting to meet you after the show even if it was only
for a second. I don't remember his name, but I met a cool guy
backstage who used to work with your dad in vegas.
The glasses were fun, thanks a lot for sharing.
I love The Used too... :) also, have you ever heard of damien
rice? his album 'O' was released yesterday and he's gonna be on
letterman on friday... he's a singer/songwriter from ireland... pretty
mellow music, but I love him...
I will check it. thanks
What don't you like about the female vocals for self righteous?
I found your dislike surprising, since it was the song that
caught my attention most strongly on my first listening.
Also, is the original jam recorded, and if so will we ever get to
hear it?
I have the original jam, and to me it’s better.
I know others disagree, It just sounds like “THE Rainbow
Connection” from the muppet movie to me.
It just an opinion, there like assholes and everyones got one. I
agree to disagree.
What's up Tony? I just
wanted to say that I have been an avid 3EB fan for what seems like
forever now. There is
honestly not any other band in the music business that sounds quite like
you guys do. I write song
lyrics on a daily basis, with you guys as my inspiration.
I enjoy writing them and I believe that a majority of them are
pretty damn good. I was
wondering, is there any way I can send a few of them to you and you can
possibly be a critic to what's good and bad about them?
I know you are a busy man, but there's no hurt in asking.
Thank you for your time and looking forward to seeing you again
this fall. Rock on Tony!
Come to show near you and be by the bus after the show and hand it to
me. I will respond through
email. MUST REMIND THAT YOU
HANDED TO ME IN THE EMAIL.
Hey, I'm Sarah and I'm from North Dakota. My question for you is more a
request, but anyway, I love the song Gorgeous, and I know you mentioned
in another answer that you had never heard this song, but you are the
only way I know to make contact with my favorite band, so if possible,
would you please try to push everyone else to release this song,
somehow. This is my favorite song of all time and it would be awesome if
we had a studio recorded version.
I’ve never heard the
song in question, it’s a SJ question
I was a huge fan of 3eb when KC was lead guitarist and I still love 3eb
just as much now that you're in the band. As guitar players, what are
the differences between you and KC?
I think he is more effect driven, we both share similarities, I think
I may tend to be a bit more complex rhythmically, we both like
landscapes, we both play learned through guitar hero times of the late
80’s and early 90's.
If you could describe Third Eye Blind in one word, what would it be?
pulse
I saw you guys at a Massachusetts show back in April. You blew me away!
Being up in the first row right in front of you on my 16th birthday was
an experience I will remember & cherish for the rest of my life. I
saw how many fans, including myself, were going nuts over your
outstanding guitar playing & vocals. So that made me curious: how do
you feel now when you see fans acting this way? In other words, since
you've come into 3EB, did you think that you would be accepted this
easily and willingly by the fans? Does it come as a surprise to you?
If it feels true, it is true, and we are brothers, its was accepting for
the fans because they are fans more of the feeling and can sense
something genuine, and the vehicles for that feeling are only parts, I
was there from the beginning and my guitar influence is through a couple
of songs besides semi as well.
Question about the chords you use when you play blinded. I know the
tuning, and I am pretty damn good at figuring out songs by watching and
listening to you play them, but you have really stumped me on blinded.
The intro chords I know, but once stephan stops playing, I have an Idea
but every time I think I have it, I watch your hands, and see that I am
off. Any help with this would be great....? Last part, when you play it,
do you really play the little hammer on part on the 5th string, (in this
tuning the high a string) at the same time as you play the chords? It
seems literally impossible, but I know you are quite the man, so I don't
know, I'm very lost haha. Please please give me some advice on this one
at least, or perhaps a little Diagram, I know you're busy, so whatever
you can do would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank's so much dude, and the
mere fact that you can write chords that I can't figure out makes you my
guitar god, but there are many more reasons too. You rock dude.
It aint easy start by tuning the guitar t FACFAE, many muted notes open
scales between muted and muted chords.
Hard to explain with words needs a tab. Sorry
I was just wondering if you guys where going to be filming the House of
Blues concert in Vegas. The Vegas september 2000 show is one of the
coolest shows I have ever seen!!! You guy should film it again and
release it on DVD. Also I love "Down" and
"Invisible" from the Majik Alex demo you should rerecord them!
Is there any chance "Scattered" might get on the EP? Do you
think you'll be playing longer shows? Thanks A Lot. TONY ROCKS!!!!
I don't know if we will be filming, but Vegas is my home town

Questions/Answers:
Tony who and or what influenced you the greatest when you first started
to play guitar?
My father first, he is the most talented artist-musician I know, he can
do anything great when it comes to Painting, singing, comedy, songwriting,
writing, sculpting-violin-guitar-lute-classical piano… the list goes on.
He traveled most his life, and I was pretty much raised by my mom who was
a professional dancer until she met my dad. My dad lived and still lives a
larger than life rock star status than any of us can have or ever will.
The times have not gotten better for this art form for career longevity.
The Beatles was the first post father influence of mine and I approached
it with a vengeance. Still and always will be the greatest songwriters of
all time, I still love them. I was also deeply moved when I saw my
Woodstock concert on TV of Jimi Hendrix, I don't think anyone will ever
touch that kind of greatness on the guitar. Eddie Van Halen impressed me
too as a kid, but Jimi as a guitar god- that's the best it will ever be. I
strive for that as a performer and musician.
I'm New Zealand's biggest Third Eye Blind fan and was wondering if 3eb
would be touring and coming to New Zealand or if not would there be a
World Tour ?
We're talking about doing it. I have relatives on my wife's side from
New Zealand. His name is Frasier, who happens to be in the U.S. while I
touring and acting as a surrogate dad to my son while I am gone. He is a
great, grounded guy. I want to move to New Zealand and focus on my
classical guitar playing one day when the rock star thing is no longer fun
to me.
I saw u guys in buffalo, ny last year with the goos and vc. any chance
u will be coming back there this year, or possibly around rochester, ny??
please, please, please??
I am pretty sure we will in the Fall. But the Booking agents know what's
up for real.
I was just wondering what type of pedals you use, like who makes them
and what specific types you have to get the sound you do. I like the
effects you have on OOTV. They work so well for each song! Anyways, any
information would be great.
For the most part I like a standard Rotovibe-univibe- I think the old
Crybaby Wah Wah's are the best, don't like Duncan's, anything else will
do. I like the old MXR phase 90's. The most important part is vintage
amps, and an engineer with good ideas, like Sean Bearsford to help you on
the journey.
How about that covers album you guys were working on a while back? If
I remember correctly you had most if not all of the tracks
recorded...but I haven't heard it mentioned in a while, so I was
curious. Is it still being worked on, and if not, is there any chance of
the songs being released through the official website as MP3s or on
future singles as b-sides?
As I remember it, that was Arion's baby. He is the biggest music trivia
and basic music fan I know or know of, I think vinyl is what holds his
bones together. HA HA. I think he should go toe to toe with Mark M from
Sugar Ray. I know a lot about Beatles careers, and that's it. I hope we do
the cover album thing on Vinyl, but I can't say when it will fit in.
Tony- would you consider still doing the guitar lesson stuff? If so,
what can I do for that?
I like teaching, but it has become a impossibility for me right now.
Some day. Just never give up un getting better, visualize it and make it
happen, if you believe, you achieve.
Will you ever start up your guitar lessons again? And if so when?
When I have time, maybe when I move to New Zealand.
Does this Tony/Kevin thing piss you off yet?
No. In my opinion it's good for people get answers, to grow and move on
from the feelings that they think hold them down. IN MY OPINION. Kevin now
can express himself musically in the way I guess he felt he couldn't in
3eb, and because he was unhappy, that band had to split up after trying
many ways to fix many problems. They were unhappy, personally, I think you
can feel it from the first to the second albums. I like reading people's
opinions, and am willing to personally email any of the ones left who are
still hurting from the transformation, just leave your email IN YOUR
QUESTION. It's not like I am your enemy and If it's merely a taste thing,
you should support KC and buy his records. Love is always the answer.
Why use alternate tunings on blinded when you could use standard and
play f#maj?
FACFAE, which if I remember correctly makes for a open Fmajor 7th chord
which would not make the correct intervals to use F# from standard. The
alternate tuning is what makes it beautiful to me because you can use the
open notes along with muted and held notes. Also, there is a moving melody
inside the riff that can't be done with standard.
Tony, it seemed like some of the songs from OOTV are songs that had
been written early, possibly during KC's time as lead guitarist- i.e.
blinded (which I think was originally called "an old friend coming
over"??) and wake for young souls... for the songs that you didn't
help write from scratch, was it more difficult or limiting to write
riffs over the already written melodies/rhythms?
The only song that had been written before I rejoined the band on OOTV,
is Wake for Young Souls, and I had originally written some of of those
guitar parts when I was initially in the band. Stephan, I, and Arion wrote
Old friend coming over- which became Blinded- from scratch, way after KC
departure, and Wake for young souls was written before he even joined the
band in early 95. To your second question, No, because most, unless
Stephan had a rough version riff like in Crystal Baller in advance, were
written while jamming in a room together. There were no songs where I put
guitar parts on a song that was already completed. Separately I went to
Stephan's house and played him the riffs that became- Company-Hit and
Run-Palm Reader.
One other question is what role, if any, did you play in producing
OOTV? Thanks Tony...you rock
In my opinion, I wrote guitar parts without guidance for about 80% of
my parts, the other 15% Stephan helped- an 5% to Arion. As far as guitar
sounds go Stephan was very involved and particular and he would make sure
he got what he wanted. Arion helped Make me feel comfortable, when I
couldn't get my groove to lock in at first. I had input I think on My
vocal parts on Blinded- The chorus of Crystal Baller. On some songs I
Pretty much recorded the guitars alone- with the exception of the ok of
Stephan on the sounds. I HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE SOUNDS OR PARTS OF ANY
OF THE OTHER INSTRUMENTS OR MIXES ON THE PRODUCTION END. As a guitar
player, I tried to facilitate what Stephan and Arion wanted to hear from
the guitar, and they have different likes and dislikes. but SJ and AS
deserve the credit with Carmer for production, in my opinion in that
order. Sean Bearsford was a great help to me in allowing me to feel
comfortable in a very tense situation. I learned a lot during the
recording from each one of them, from Stephan as a rhythm player, from
Arion, for being a friend patient fucking guy, and Brad for being Brad. It
took me a some time to lock the groove of my parts in, but I came out of
it as a greater force. A shout out of thanks to my bandmates.
Hey Tony, who/what decides on the setlists you guys create when
playing on the road?
Sj-AS most of the time, sometimes Brad will weigh in. I just wish we
could play for an extra 2 hours a night. It's the only fun there is to be
had.
Is there any chance "I want you" or "The
Background" can be slipped back into rotation?
We did Background last night, cuz I pushed the issue with SJ, it will be
rotated in and out with I want you, which we already do in the set.
Hi Tony, I think you rock and I think it is awesome that you held out
the first 2 albums to be with your family, you definitely have your
priorities straight. My question is how hard has it been for you
replacing KC, to me it seems a smooth transition, but I wonder how much
grief the fans gave you?
The funny thing is, I don't get grief, never had. In my life I want to
send out a smile, and when you do that negativity does not come back.
Another question, how can I get an email to SJ?
Stephanjenkins.com.
And when are we going to get a recorded version of the 'real' Slow
Motion?!
On the EP.
What is your opinion on current rock music? any bands that you would
like to tour with that you haven't yet?
I like some. I kinda like Hoobastank for a few songs, and really like
"the Used". And I think that song GO with the FLOW is a monster
with that video.
I thought you guys were awesome on Good Morning America. I was
wondering a) If you saw an idiot on the audience wearing a top-hat(me)
and b) did you know they were going to have to cut Jumper so early in
the song?
Corporations have advertisers?
What jobs did you have before 3eb Tony?
Guitar teacher-Local music scene guy- cover bands… Your basic band
bum.
Are you still using the nickname, The Monkey? I haven't heard any
references to it in quite some time.
No, that was more of a SJ thing he thought it fit me, I thought it was
funny for a minute, cuz we friends of mine from the day used to call each
other monkeys, and somehow SJ unconsciously caught on to it so I let it
stick, You can call me what you like, a name is merely a label for the
character beneath.
If you were a superhero, what would your superhero name be, and what
superpowers would you have?
Ultramanic- I would be able to cure the pain that people keep locked
away in the dark recesses of their beings.
If you could sit down and have dinner with any 3 people, living or
dead, who would you choose? What would you talk about?
Jim Morison- Jimi Hendrix- Carl Jung- Lee Harvey Oswald. What is
the meaning of all of this. Smile and be happy. Live in the moment.
If you had one month to live, what would you do with yourself?
Teach my son as much as I can, Make video tapes for different parts of
his life when he would need my guidance. Spend hours holding on to my wife
and son.
What was the happiest day of your life? The saddest?
It's a tie for the happiest- Getting Married-The birth of my son. The
saddest-When my Grandmother died when I was 12.
Whats your favorite TV show? (not necessarily currently running)
Gilligans island- its got everything, humor and the sexiest women ever
on TV- except for Mrs howell of course. When you are younger you Like
Ginger, but now, Mary Ann is the shiznit.
What is your favorite book?
Archetypes and the collective unconscious- Carl Jung.
Whats your favorite
color?
I like light Green, but I also dig red and purple.
Whats your favorite guitar?
My white Les Paul/ my Classical guitar
At the House of Blues show in, I think, Las Vegas, (whichever was on
TV) you were playin this one guitar with some kind of funky light thing
between the neck and the bridge. What the hell was that thing, man?
I have a mad scientist friend named Trotsky who can build anything, and
I wanted to have a laser beam guitar, He made it for me, and I am thinking
of auctioning it and giving the money to charity.
Tony, all (yes, this is an 'audience-response' question-please reply!)
Anyone agree that Tony has that Seth Green thing goin' on?
I have heard that before, I don't see it, but I would love to do an
Austin Powers movie though.
Are there any lyrics on any song you had a hand in writing that have
personally meanings for yourself that no one would be able to really pick
up on?
I will say that the song Company is one that I can relate to. I know
what depression can be like.
What is the significance of the picture of Arion wiping what seems to
be blood off his face, on the inside of the album? Does it relate to the
whole bleeding from the vein idea? What amazing lyrics, from good man.
Not my idea, must ask Arion.
I know you guys have been in NY a lot lately (just saw you at GMA--Great
show!! A WILL TO BURN!!), but, Just wondering, do you imagine you'll be
back before the year's end? (We just can't get enough...)
In the Fall J
I have fallen head-over-heels in love with "Another Life"...
why was that song put as it was, and not officially on the album? Quite
different from anything else.. has a sort of groove to it.. hope to hear
more like it!!
It was a last minute decision, and it was added. I am glad you like
it.
What will be different with the guitar work on your solo album from
the work you do with the guys in 3eb?
I will have the control to decide what sounds I like without over
guidance, But maybe with a different producer. You will have to wait and
see, and so will I.
Who is your favorite super hero?
Ultraman from the old days.
Message from Tony:
WE
PLAYED BACKGROUND TONITE AND IT WAS GREAT. WE WILL BE PLAYING IT
IN TRADE WITH I WANT YOU, I LOVE THE LYRICS IN BACKGROUND. I KNOW IT
WILL BRING JOY.

People,
Background will be getting its moments live soon-
within the next 3 shows. I will force it through to SJ. I just
played it on my classical guitar while looking out at the ocean here in
Miami Beach, and what a masterpiece it is. It could be one of my top
2 songs from the first 2 albums, it's a feeling song, my favorite
ones. Here are my favs from those 2 and the new album, from a
songwriters point of view, in order.
I feel those songs more than others, I can feel SJ words coming out from
him into him as therapy, and I feel it as therapy to myself, he can shine
bright. The guitar is masterful as well on all these. I like songs
the most that that bare the human soul without gimmickry, unnecessary
overwording. Stephan deserves applause for the lyrical emotions hit
in these songs in particular in my opinion. I give credit for the guitar
work on the songs listed to KC and SJ for Jumper, as well as the Bass and
Drums. I will force Background through. Also, I am ready for
as many questions as you want, if it's to personal, I will still try my
best to answer anyway. Email Paula.
1. God of Wine
2. Background
3. Jumper
4. Wounded
5. SCL
6. Losing a whole year
7. I Want you
On the new album in order
1. Palm Reader
2. Blinded
3. Forget Myself
4. Hit and Run
5. Exile
6. Danger
While still better than a lot of other things I hear on the radio here are
my least from a songwriters point of view in order. I love all songs
but have my favs and here agree but here are the ones that fall in that
category.
1. Camouflage
2. Burning Man
3. Self Righteous with female vox, like the girl, but not for the song-
the original jam when written rocks with just the band. MY OPINION- I KNOW
OTHERS DISAGREE
4. Can't get away- too much info with too many guitar players- don't
like Tator tots at all, otherwise, it's a hit song.
5 Company- which is one of my favs- got overloaded with vocals, it's could
have been one of the tops with GOW, but the vocals made it too busy,

Is
there any possibility that the fans could ever get an mp3 of that
version of Wake For Young Souls that was scrapped?
It's
up SJ. I would vote for it, but like a democracy- with a president SJ
has the veto.
Are
you guys ever going to release that album full of cover songs?
Arion
pushes hard for it. I think it would be cool and easy to so, on Vinyl.
One day soon.
Even
if your solo album sells a kajillion copies, you still aren't leaving us
(3eb). Right? RIGHT!?
As
long as I love making music with these guys and we feel it's special I
will be there as a guitar player, and co songwriter. My solo thing is a
very personal quest of mine. The personal parts of my thoughts and exact
feelings for the guitar-undisturbed that need to come out, and this is
the best way to do that. The EP will have moments of that for the
guitar, but I have words and ideas to share that I want to reach out to
you that I cannot in 3EB. I love my 3eb, as long as it doesn't feel
forced we will make music together, no matter how big any of our side
projects may be.
Tony,
how about "Scattered"? Any plans for putting it on the EP or
anywhere else that you know of? It's my favorite song that hasn't been
released yet, I'd love for you guys to put it out.
I
like it to, but again another SJ question. I think for the most part he
wants to work on ideas that are new, and let the old demo's be for the
hard cores.
We've
heard a couple of rumors on the TVCY forums that the Stephan said the
song "Gorgeous" was a possibility for the acoustic album. Have
you heard anything about this? And would it be possible since Kevin
Cadogan co-wrote the song?
Anything
is possible. I have heard nothing of that. I have never heard the song
you are talking about. That will again be up to SJ TO VETO OR ok.
I've
been trying to teach myself to play guitar, unsuccessfully, for over a
year. I remember seeing that you had an instructional video up on the
3eB website for awhile, what happened to it? Can I still get it? I
figure who better to motivate me to play finally, haha.
The
video was for beginners, but could be good for anyone. The best advice
is practice your ass off. Be able to hmm or sing the notes you play when
you play them, love doing it, never make yourself do it, and take all
else advice, including mine with a grain of salt.
How
did you feel when you saw 3EB make it to the big time without you?
Honestly,
Very happy for Stephan and Arion, cuz I knew how hard they worked.
Bummed that I missed the ride, but I was a new dad and it didn't really
overwhelm me. Some things are bigger than music.
How did you feel when you realized you were back in?
Overjoyed to be making music again with them, and a little blown
away. Felt a little remorse for KC, but I think it at heart was a mutual
conflict and set of conflicts that made it more and more impossible For
them to enjoy making music. If you don't enjoy a relationship, should
you continue to be unhappy, forever?, or become happy again doing
something else? As a band, we have our fights, but the key is that we
each respect each other and are not working against the will of the
band. Arion, whom I may fight with sometimes, is my best friend, whether
he knows it or not. I care about how these guys feel. Sometimes I get a
little out of touch with my emotions and really miss my wife and son and
unfairly disconnect from the social aspect of the band, and become
passive or just plain aggressive, which is something I am working on, I
am no saint for sure. But in the end, I love each one of them- with
their fuck ups too- just as I share a bond with all of you who share the
beauty of the moments we create, even the few who hate, I think I can
relate to them, but I love you to. I was not the bully in school,
I was the loner- the outsider-antisocial artist-but I kept my dreams
alive- no matter what people said-parents-school- whatever-and no matter
what you do- don't ever let your dreams die- it's the threshold to your
living divinity on this planet. I believe that none of us would be
here making this music without you, it's our connection that makes the
music. Ego does not make music-pain and joy and experience makes music.
Musicians should be humble to be the vehicles of the publics energies,
and not take it to ego. Thanks for allowing me a job that lets me put
food on my families table, and shoes on my sons feet. You have embraced
me, and I really care about you. Without you, we each would be making
songs alone that help balance out the incredible imbalance of pain and
social disorders that music helps us each to heal, which will never stop
until the last breath. All that said rock on.
What
song that you have written or co-written makes you the most proud
Palm Reader.
What
is the best way in meeting you guys after a show? I'm going to be at the
Dallas show, and i'd love to say hi. do you know that you are now
officially the coolest rock star EVER?!?!?
Well
thanks, there are a couple guys in the band who might disagree with your
assessment, but thank you very much.
I
was wondering what 'Invisible' will be like if/when it shows up on your
solo record? Will it be more similar to the newer Third Eye Blind
version or the older Majik Alex version?
If
it makes it to my solo record, more like MA version but rerecorded with
a producer.
Why
is Danger produced so differently on OOTV than the other songs? And do
you guys mind coming back to State College, PA when school starts back
up?
Personally,
I love Danger, it was a complete band collaboration and the reason it is
more low fi is that it was recoded in 2 days all at our studio, which
makes the drums a bit boxier sounding.
Having
been a fan of 3eB for six years, and even more so since your arrival to
the band I have become exceedingly interested in playing guitar. How did
you find your rhythm and playing style? What would you recommend to any
of the aspiring musicians who want to put out our own original sound
into the world?
As
a soloist listen to the singer, as a rhythm player listen to the
drummer. Stephan helped to make me a better rhythm player by using your
left hand in concert with the drum kit. Be your self and you will be
original.
We
all kind of had a thread about the writing on the tophat that is on the
back of the OOTV cd. It says "Wizzard".. I was wondering, what
is this referring to? I had an thought that it might be referring to the
Discworld series of books by Terry Pratchett, in which a character named
Rincewind, a failed wizard, wears a hat that has Wizzard written on it.
Or am I totally wrong? And a quick personal question... I had tickets to
the Grand Rapids, Michigan Show scheduled for May 23rd, but it was
cancelled. Any reason that you know of? I was depressed for a week
Don't
really know.
Hey Tony, what are your thoughts on Danger being a possible single? And
do you think Misfits would be radio-friendly?
Danger
Rocks and should be a single, I know some fans think this and that about
it, but it has the moist powerful guitar riff on the album, it' not
slicked out and the bridge rules. Misfits has been talked about too, but
more for Alt RADIO only.
How
long do you see 3eb being around and/or you being apart of it?
As
long as we make music that connects to your hearts and makes us happy
when doing it.
Did
you ever give up on being a musician? What made you stick with it?
Couldn't
gave up on it if I wanted too, but did put it on the back burner and
went to college to study psychology, cuz that's a dream of mine too. I
will always stick with music as a way to heal parts of myself that only
songwriting and playing music can do in my opinion.
What
is your ultimate set list of 3eb/cover songs that you would like to play
at a concert?
Along
The Watchtower-Hendrix- anYthing white album late Beatles- The wHo- Kids
are Alright
What
are your top 5 records?
The
White Album- Beatles
Are You Experienced-Hendrix
The doors-Self Titled
Elvis Costello-My aim is true
Steve Miller band Greatest hits
Does
yohimbe really work?
ABSOLUTELY.
Read directions. Don't take too much and only 2 or 3 times a week.
How
do you decide what tuning to write a song in? Do you just chose one and
go from there, or do you see which it works better in?
Sometimes it starts with a vocal I listen to it and twist the tuning
to my feeling, If not I sometimes do it in a random manner while at home
and then show Stephan. It's more interesting and makes the landscape
different with the odd tunings. I like tunings that bend up sounding
whacked out if played open- like Misfits. That makes you have to really
learn the left hand mute technique when playing each chord, which makes
it fun.
Your back up vocals on the album are KICKASS. Does it hurt to sing them
live since they are so high and all? Does it strain your voice at all or
do you just have really good range?
Yeah,
funny thing is those were either 1st or 2nd take-no aotutune, which in
today's world is unheard of. My vocal parts in Blinded are the highest
notes on the record. Sometimes I nail em, sometimes, not. I do have a
high range, but I find that using in ear monitors make it much harder to
decipher the pitch in high ranges when belting high notes and with
nerves pumping my high notes sometimes unfortunately tend to go sharp-
they don't crack though, which would suck the worst. Stephan goes through
the same problems as well on TV. I am working on getting it better. It
sucked on Leno, but I am a perfectionist at heart, and even at 7:45am
with no sleep it sounded preety good on GMA. In 3eb I sing the high
stuff cuz I am the only one who can. Most Artists, I could name a long
list, bring systems that can fix notes after recording, we don't. The
part on guitar is also quite difficult and makes the Blinded part more
challenging, but I do love a good challenge.
it's
kinda been a while since you guys were in the uk isn't it! just
wondering if you happen to know of any plans to tour in the uk??? at
all??? ever??? well anyway i hope so. cheers man!
I
would love to, if it's logistical, but the final decision is up to SJ.
I
just wanted to say thanks so much for responding to fans like this...it
really makes a huge difference to us. My question is, do you guys enjoy
spending time with fans after shows, or is it just more of a hassle? and
if you do like it, what can fans do to up their chances of saying hi
after a show?
Stay
near the blue bus, we rarely leave anyone hangin to long. I'm married,
so I am the one only good for a quick hello, maybe a picture , and a
autograph though, no hangin, I love my wife too much and am lucky to
have her in my life to be sleezy and ruin the most important thing I
have, my wife and son. I don't drink as much on this album cycle and it
helps keep my sanity.
Will
you PLEASE try and get a studio version of Invisible on the EP? It is an
awesome song I love the work you did on it, and everything else you do.
Tony, you rawk!
It
will come, but sadly not with 3eb.
How
is it touring with your brother? I am pretty sure he was on the last
tour, not sure yet if he is on this one, but I know that if I were to
spend so much time with one of my siblings, great, creative things
certainly would not come of it. How do you balance out the work aspect
and the family aspect?
It's
easy, Chris is a multitalented guy. He is easy to get along with and is
great help to us live. He has been the guitar player in bands of mine
before, so I know how to interact with him. He's the kind of guy who
could do it all, if he pushed himself too. I love him, and the whole
band is lucky to have a talent like that backing us up.
06.05.03
People,
I just saw a rough cut of the video from Blinded, and I am very happy
with it, finally a non pretentious video, thanks to Mick Rock-legend,
and 3eb, a true group effort and it shows :). The band is sharing
real exchanges, and having fun, even though it's a bit low fi it fits.
I think you should know it's coming. Look for it soon.
Request At MTV- m2, and of course VH1 soon as well as at your fav radio.
We love you all. I will get to your questions soon, mail to paula,
and look for us tomorrow morning on GMA early around 7 a.m.

Tony
is really interested in answering any questions you may have. The
Village Church Yard was kind enough to set up a thread
where you can post questions, but instead we are going to ask
that you email any
questions you have for Tony right to Paula. I will copy
them and send them to Tony. He'll reply back and I'll post his
replies. I'll try to send as many questions as I can as often as
possible. Just keep them coming in! For now, here are the
first batch of Q's answered by Tony!
Questions/Answers:
Tony,
I'm really interested in your solo record. Can we expect something along
the lines of Majik Alex or will it be more Apocrypha-style guitar music?
The same goes for the EP - I'm really curious to hear how instrumental
3eb will sound.
I want to have some moments on the EP that are truly symphonic guitar
wise. My solo effort will
be MY GROWTH a lyricists guitar player songwriter, it will rock and be
beautiful in different spots and my goal is to make an album
that connects to the heart of ya.
Tony will
Carnival Barker end up being an instrumental?
I am not sure yet. It
stands at about 8 minutes now, and could be, but Stephan has some
interesting melodies for parts so I am not 100 per cent sure.
Tony, i know i shouldn't be getting ahead of myself here with an EP
coming soon for us, but is there a plan for an acoustic record? If so,
is there a time period when we could expect it?
Yes, and I think it will
happen before next summer. Stephan
has many idea’s about how this could be done.
Personally, I really loved the Nirvana unplugged and hope we go
in that direction, but we shall see.
Tony! Any Canadian dates scheduled? Montreal, specifically...screw
Toronto and Vancouver! They don't matter much to me (heh...kidding,
Yusuf
). Anyhoo, please say 'yes'. Pretty please? I'm going through withdrawal
and am experiencing convulsions: it ain't pretty.
We will, hang tight.
Which songs are most fun for you to play live and why?
I like Faster cuz it rocks- Blinded- cuz we play well together, and
just about everything else for it’s own reason.
Where do you think Invisible
will end up?
On my solo album. I am not sure though.
Tony, are there any tentative titles for the EP? I think i speak for
everyone here at TVCY when i say that Symphony of Decay would be an
excellent choice.
Symphony of decay is the one being tossed around.
What is the tuning for Another Life? Is it really standard or did you
not include it when you made your alternate tunings list because it is a
hidden track?
Yes it’s standard.
Tony, can you tell Stephan to, or maybe you could release some demos of
the OOTV tracks? I think it would be awesome to hear some more lyrical
and musical alternate versions.
A question for Jenkins, sounds
good to me.
I'd appreciate knowing what kind of guitar/amp gear you (and the band)
used during the recording of the album. Also, what gear does the band
use during your live set? Thanks.
Strats- Les Pauls- Marshall amps-
Vox amps- Fender amps. I
use a Bogner amp in place of the Marshall live.
Tony, are there any songs that
you would like to play live that for some reason do not get included on
the setlist? Also, are
there any songs that you play live that you wish you could replace with
another? And last but
certainly not least, if it was up to you, would The Background ever be
included on the set list seeing as how it hasn't been played live in a
couple years.
I hope so.
I love that song. I WILL PRESSURE Stephan on it.
Tony, what piano chords/notes
are played in My Time In Exile
I believe they are inversions of fmaj, but I did it very fast and would
have to sit back down on the piano to say for sure.
They song originally had an entire music bed under it.
The piano I did was done as a joke.
Vanessa C and Stephan called me and said, THAT’S IT THAT’S
IT. I was like what?
Tony HELP us fans here @ TVCY
and get the rest of the band agree to record and release "All Right
Caroline" Is there a glimmer of hope that you can give us on this?
Possibly on the ep.
Do other songs from Majik Alex exist and if so any chance we'll get to
hear them? How could you leave Chicago out as a tour stop?
I love Chicago, I have no idea
how it got left out, but we will see ya there this fall.
Okay first of all, please no one hate me for bringing up old demons but
Tony's first message said: “As far as 3eb with Kevin, I like the work
they did together”, and it got me wondering, if you Tony -- have you
ever gotten like Hate Mail from Kevin fans or should I rather say
Anti-Tony fans.
At first there were a few people who were confused, but at this point it
really shouldn’t matter anymore.
I'm sure you get tons of Great Fan Mail to outweight any potential Hate
Mail. We Love You, you rock!!
True
Did Joseph get his technicolour
dreamcoat back?
That was a funny one. Arion
is just Jealous cuz the girl didn’t give that jacket to him HAHA.
What songs are you considering
for the EP?
So far Al Right Caroline-Carnival Barker-Full version -Slow Motion.
A DVD with the "making
of" of every album is a thing to continue in future?
Sounds good to me
Planings for a live concert in DVD?
Sounds good to me-
How do you see 3eb, a pop/rock band, alt/pop rock or other??
Most new bands sound the
same. I really like “The
Used” though
For future solos, what type are you thinking? ... similar to Company or
in another level like the ones in Apocrypha?
Less shred-more overlays-solo’s with singing melodies.
