EXCLUSIVE TF.com TONY INTERVIEW!

On April 13th in Miami, the entire TF.com Crew had a chance to hang out with Tony and ask him all the questions you sent in.  We had a blast and Tony was more than willing to answer all the things we had to ask. And also, for the record, Michelle had a horrible sore throat this day :)

Check out extras from the Interview!

Tony: You gonna be able to hear me? Should I put it like this? *adjusts recorder*

Paula: Ok is it on?

Tony: Yeah it's on.

Paula: Awesome. If Third Eye Blind were ever to do a cover album, what songs would you hope to cover on it?

Tony: Me personally or the band?
Paula: You personally.

Tony: Me personally, I'd be more inclined to wanna cover some Beatles songs or maybe a random Pink Floyd song or something. I'm more the psychedelic guy in the band I think.

Michelle: In the past, you have mentioned Jimmy Page of Led Zepplin and Jimi Hendrix as influences while you were growing up, if you had to pick one single player, who would it be?

Tony: Jimi Hendrix. Just because he was the ultimate rock star of flashy guitar player I think.

Paula: How do you feel about the music for the new album?
Tony: I think it's truly inspired. I think that we've been taking our time on it. It's coming from uh-

Paula: I think you've been taking your time, that's for sure.

Michelle: *laughter*

Tony: I think that we're all pretty focused in, that's what I think.

Paula: How far along is it?
Tony: Right now we're at the stages where we're close to mixing songs.  Some songs still need more parts on them.  But the basics are done on all the songs.  Some songs still need the guitars.  Some songs need vocals.  Some songs just need to be mixed.

Michelle: But you guys have a lot though, right?

Tony: There's a lot of songs, we have something like 30 songs going.  So to get through the whole process of that, of having them reach their zenith, and then figuring out which ones shine the most.

Michelle: I have a question about one I heard in Vegas.

Tony: Oh it's good to take your time sometimes.

Michelle: There's one with… what is that one… "To Be With You"?
Tony: Yeah, yeah.

Michelle: That, I like that… you guys really…

Tony: Yeah that's one of mine and Stephan's.

Paula: I'm kinda liking…

Michelle: Even when I was listening, I was just like…

Tony: Yeah, I think that one makes the record.

Paula: Here Steve, you wanna ask one?
Michelle: It's Steve's turn, it's Steve's turn.

Steve: What am I asking?
Paula: The top one.

Steve: How would you define or describe the new music?
Paula: Well, I think we just did that.

Tony: Personally I think it's sort of a return to the roots of the band, the first album, but yet there's sort of a shift in the musicality as far as I think how the arrangements of the songs are a little bit different and I think it might be a little bit more of a rock album than the first.  A departure from the second album more towards the first.

Paula: All your solo stuff, all that, is really different from Third Eye Blind, are you happy with the change in music that you have?
Tony: Well I made that transformation actually back when I was originally in Third Eye Blind.  Those early albums were kinda like my delving into more neo-classical heavy metal guitar.  So I kinda got lost in the desert, so to speak, one time, some psychedelic drugs.  I came back a different person…oh I don't mind, whatever.

Michelle: Can I slip a random question in here, because I just got this CD.  Andrew WK.  Working with him.  I just got his CD, what was it like working with him?

Tony: I wasn't actually there when he came in the studio.  Arion and Stephan went to his show and Arion's a really huge fan of his album.  So they just asked him to come down, and he came down, and sang on this song called "Messed Up Kid".

Paula: Is it gonna be "Messed Up Kid" or uh…
Michelle: "Fucked Up Kid".

Tony: You know I think it'll end up being "Messed Up Kid" even though, you know "Fucked Up…"
Paula: Didn't you write that one awhile ago?
Tony: That was actually the first song that as a band we wrote together when I rejoined.  Right at the beginning when I was rehearsing for the tour, the first one.

Paula: Because I remember I thought I read about that like, awhile ago.

Tony: Yeah yeah yeah.

Paula: What's your favorite new song?
Tony: I think the song called "Company" is on another level.

Michelle: Is that the one about…something about a shower…

Tony: No no no, that's "Friend Coming Over".  There's a lot of them…as a whole the record, as a whole, is just solid, it will be solid all the way through.  There won't be any filler.

Paula: Is it gonna be called "Crystal Baller"?
Tony: I think that's what Stephan wants to do.

Paula: Because that's been released on the Internet as the title.

Tony: Yeah, I'm thinking that's what, I don't know, that is gonna end up being Stephan's decision, I don't know if he's decided that or not.

Paula: Do you like that title?
Tony: Yeah, yeah I like it.

Paula: I like the song.  What equipment do you use in the studio?

Tony: We use a lot of organic sounds, like old Marshall plexy amps, we have old Fender tweed amps, basically older amps, stuff that has the kinda the old school sound, like Zepp sounds.  Nothing really on the new tip really.  We do use a mesa bogey for certain things.

Paula: Yeah I was talking to Mike awhile ago, from 12 Volt, he said…

Tony: His amp, yeah

Paula: Did you get that?

Tony: I bought a couple of those amps and then we AB-ed them and it turned out that mine were just the same.  I just always thought his was…because back then I really didn't have any good equipment.

Paula: One of the first things he ever told me was "Tony is so jealous of my amp".

Tony: I was, I totally was.

Paula: "Tony's in love with my amp".

Tony: I thought his amp was great, but then after being away from it and not realizing that the equipment I had before wasn't that good, and then the equipment I have now really actually is really good, so, it's sorta like a myth.

Michelle: What is your favorite type of music to listen to?
Tony: Nowadays I'm listening to classical music.  It's really challenging to the ear.  It stimulates my mind.

Paula: I'll ask this next one…How do you feel about your brother being part of the live band?  Do you have any sibling rivalry?
Tony: No, no…he's the first person, as soon the band asked me to rejoin the band, the first person I thought of was Chris, because he's a very talented guy and he fit the part perfectly.  There's really no, none of that, at least from my end.

Michelle: Tell us your thoughts on the current state of music

Tony: You know, it's just like it's always been, you know, bands all sound the same, then once in awhile a really good band will step out do something that's sorta different.

Michelle & Paula: 'NSync!, Yeah, 'NSync is the best!

Tony: And then a bunch of bands will try to sound like that band, and some will sell records and the rest will fall off and then only certain ones survive.

Michelle: Yeah it's like the Incubus and Hoobastank issue, that people like to say they sound the same.

Tony: Yeah it's the same, yeah.

Paula: This is my favorite question, this was sent in by Doot, if Third Eye Blind was ever stranded on an island and one of the guys would have to be sacrificed in order for the others to survive, who would be the first to go?
Tony: Oh god, I don't know, that's tough.  That's a good question but it's a weird question.  If we were stranded?  Maybe Stephan?  Because he has the most meat on him?  If we couldn't get any food.  Do you mean…how stranded are we?
Paula: You're very stranded.  Horribly stranded.

Michelle: Your life depended on it.

Tony: I gotta leave that one alone, I don't know the answer to that.

Paula: Steve's gonna…

Steve: Now that you're a seasoned rock star, do you look forward to the next tour?  Pros and cons?   And summer tour, yes or no?

Tony: I look forward to touring because we haven't done it in awhile.  It's nice to have that exchange with people where you play and then it's like an immediate exchange.  The pros to it are being with my friends, hanging out with you guys, meeting people that are family to the band.  The cons are not being able to see my son that much, it's hard on the physical body to travel around a lot and you don't get much sleep and da da da da da.

Michelle: Any thoughts or comments about fans follow the band coast to coast to see shows?

Tony: You guys are dedicated.  You know, we appreciate you guys, that's why you know, we always try to do what we can to make sure you're always set up.  You guys are important to our band.

Paula: Do you promise to visit your new pet monkey at the zoo?
Tony: I promise to visit the pet monkey with MATT [from 12 Volt Sex].

Paula: With MATT.

Tony: I will go with MATT.

Paula: I told him to take you, I don't know if he will.

Steve: What is the one effect pedal you can't live without?
Tony: The wah pedal.  I think that that one is just…I think I could survive without any of the other ones.

Paula: What's the biggest part of fan interaction that would lead to a successful show? Like what part does that play to leading to a successful show?
Tony: Fan interaction? What do you mean with each other or with the band?

Michelle: I guess when you're playing…some crowds would just, like…

Tony: Yeah, I think a lot of that I leave up to Stephan because he's the guy that needs to know when the moment to really grab that energy and ride it through.  And that's what he does really good.  I let him sort of focus it out, then when I'm feeling it, it's such a weird thing, exchange of energy flow when you're playing a gig, I leave it up to Stephan to kind of guide it.

Paula: If you were a pancake, what kind of pancake would you be?
Tony:  Banana pancake.

Paula: Alright, alright.

Michelle: Do you carry anything meaningful with you on the road *Steve drops glass in background* And do you like to be a in a certain atmosphere when you write the lyrics?

Tony: Well, I don't write lyrics.  But uh, meaningful on the road…just pictures of my family.  That's the most important thing.  So at least I can remind myself of what life's all about.

Paula: What makes Tony Fredianelli, Tony Fredianelli?
Tony: I think ultimately, the ability not to take yourself too seriously, but yet, care about what you do.  Because there's fine balancing line there between ego and self-importance that could take you somewhere that makes you really lose yourself.  And I'm think I'm pretty good at seeing the clown in myself, and being able to accept that it's all just a big dance.

Michelle: This is another one of her favorite ones right here…
Paula: Would you ever consider wearing your Prince outfit on stage?
Tony: No, no, I don't think so…I think that's retired.

Paula: Do you still have it all? All the guitars?
Tony: You know what, actually, there's a guy that replaced me in "Loveshack" and I gave him…

Paula: Who replaced you?
Tony: This guy Scott.

Paula: Uhh…Scott…

Tony: Scott Beare.

Paula: Scott Beare…Oh he was in "Hostage Symphony".

Tony: Yeah he's in Shaun's band.  So yeah I gave him my costume and then I gave Stephan the guitar.

Michelle: Yeah my sister always asks me, "Ask Tony, where's the Prince guitar?" and "Where's that vest?"
Tony: Uhhh…

Michelle: The vest you wore at your first show, my sister is like, obsessed with it.

Tony: Oh yeah yeah yeah.

Paula: I'm obsessed with your uh, the pimp jacket thing you had going on there for awhile.

Tony: Oh yeah, yeah that thing is uh…

Paula: Where's that at?
Tony: That was given to me by a fan.

Paula: That is like, THE coolest jacket.

Tony: The coolest thing and somebody just…gave me.

Paula: I want one of those.

Steve: How is your life different now than it was 10 years ago and where do you see your life in 10 years?

Tony: It's different now because it's not as much of a struggle, as far as you know, trying to achieve success.  But uh, and what was your second part?

Paula: Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?
Tony: Just really being a family man.  Just taking it easy, maybe getting a little farm somewhere or something, who knows.  Really mellow, not in the super-hyped up drama that the world is in now.

Paula: Has there been any celebrity, anyone like that, you've met since rejoining the band, that you've been completely star-struck by?
Tony: Let's see, there's been a couple people, let me try to figure out one though.  Oh, Sinead O'Connor.  It was really the weirdest thing because I know it's been awhile since she's been really in the public eye.  I was really struck by her, for some reason.  I heard something about her whole thing, like her ora or something.  She just had a powerful presence.

Michelle: *something inaudible*

Tony: Yeah, I mean I've met a lot of people that are famous, but that, oh and Steve Miller, who is one of my heroes, he's an old timer but I really like him.

Paula: If you could live by one phrase would what it be? One saying?
Tony: One phrase huh…

Paula: We're really making you think.

Tony: Oh, "I am that I am".  That would be it.  That would be, look, I am that I see this out here.   Inside, everything that you're looking out at is actually just a projection of yourself and you pick it up and you pull it back to yourself.
Michelle: Next one, this is mine because I love it too.  If you could fill an empty swimming pool with anything in the world and keep it all to yourself, what would you fill it with?

Tony: Hmmm…that's a good question.  If I could fill a swimming pool with whatever I wanted to…Chocolate.  I don't know *laughter* I could come up with something better than that, but that's just the only thing I can think of.

Paula: You wanna ask this?
Steve: Who's your favorite, Michelle or Paula?
Tony: Bahhhhhhhhh

All: *laughter*

Steve: What's the most obnoxious prank each band member has done?
Tony: Prank? I don't know whose the big prankster out of our uh...I don't think any of us are really big pranksters.

Tony: There he is *laughs* There he is…

*Arion walks in, Consult SCP for Question*

*Back to Tony Interview*

Paula: So where were we here…

Michelle: Back to the obnoxious pranks.

Paula: Oh yeah.

Tony: Oh you know what, none of us are really big like that, like pranksters like that.  So I really don't know what to…I don't remember getting pranked at all really.  Although, Bobby sorta pranks us sometimes.
Paula: What's he do?
Tony: He'll just like *mocking Bobby* "Did you know that this happened…" "Did you know that the people called from the hotel and said that, you know, you're gonna have to pay all this money for this".  Be like…you know, stuff like that.

Paula: If you weren't a guitarist what would you be.

Tony: Psychologist, or something like that.

Paula: I knew it, I knew that's what you were gonna say.

Michelle: We should've placed money on that, we really should have.
Paula: Which color have you liked your hair the most and also what would you do if your name were Nancy?
Tony: If my name were Nancy?  The color…I think I like it when it's really blonde, almost white and then I also like it when it's really dark red.

Paula: I like the red.
Tony: Yeah…and if my name was Nancy?  What does it say?
Paula: What would you do?

Tony: I don't know, I guess I'd be going around the mall, looking for cool clothes and being a chick…I don't know *laughs*

Michelle: Describe each of the guys with one word.

Tony: One word, one word huh.  I don't know is "frontman" one word?
Paula: That can be a word.

Tony: Ok call Stephan that, "frontman".  Brad…"Buddy".  I would call him "buddy".  Arion…

Paula: Is outside…

Tony: I don't know, 2, I gotta call him "sex machine".  That guy's on a…

Paula: *laughs*

Tony: That would be him I guess.

Paula: Alright…

Michelle: We forgot one, didn't we? No we did 4…ok

Paula: Yeah there's 4 of them.

Michelle: I'm thinking of you I'm sorry.
Paula: Well yeah, describe yourself in a word, sure, do you happen to know anything about the potential DVD?

Tony: Stephan's working on it, it's got a lot, I mean, he knows more about it than I do.  I saw some clips for it.  He's taking a lot of time to edit things, it should be pretty cool.

Paula: I hope so.  What are your thoughts about going overseas for a tour?
Tony: I would like that.

Paula: There are a lot of fans overseas that are pretty much dying to see the band.

Tony: Yeah I know, I would like that a lot, I haven't done that with the band yet, since I've been back, we haven't done that, that'd be fun, I think it'd be great.

Steve: What has been your favorite venue while playing with Third Eye Blind? And also, as far as your favorite city to play in, because I know most places you guys will say is your favorite city and whatever, but for real, like what would be your favorite city to place in?
Tony: I think my favorite venue was when we played Madison Square Garden for that Jingle Ball, because that was just, Madison Square Garden.

Paula: Michelle got left out of that.

Tony: Really?
Michelle: It wasn't your fault, it was the Z100 people's fault.  I was there though, standing outside in the cold.

Tony: Oh that sucks, I'm sorry to hear that.

Michelle: It's all good.

Tony: Um, Chicago.  I love Chicago it's great.

Paula: I'm sure you love playing around Philly though.

Tony: Philly? *laughs*

Paula: Philly yeah…I think you should do about 10 shows in Philly.

Paula: How about…when are you expecting the album to come out?
Tony: I think we're looking at the end of July right now.  You know, it's fluxuating, we're trying to get it perfectly right.  We're trying not to force it through until it's perfect.

Michelle: We'll take it now.

Paula: They wanna take their time with it.  Well, Stephan's made it pretty clear that he wants to do a summer tour, but if it doesn't come out until the end of July, it's gonna be…

Tony: Yeah, it won't make it before the end of July, I know that, but it might make it right there.

Paula: What would you say that your biggest achievement is to date in music and life in general?

Tony: In music?  It would be the band.  And in life it would be, being a father.

Michelle: I wanna have kids cuz I'm getting old.
Tony: Oh yeah you're real old.

Michelle: I am old.

Tony: How old are you?
Michelle: 24.

Tony: Oh yeah you're ancient, you're ancient.

Michelle: I feel like I'm getting old.

Tony: Come on.

Michelle: If you could play with any band, who would you choose?

Tony: Like to join another band? Or just to jam with?  A new band…that's a good question…Red Hot Chili Peppers, I love them.

Paula: What is the name of the studio?
Tony: Morning Wood.  It always has to have some kind of sexual innuendo in it.  Never stops between Stephan and Arion.

Paula: Some people would like to know if they can expect to hear anymore Majik Alex demos from you…you've promised for…

Tony: Yeah I know, I have some, yeah you know what, it's really me just being lazy.  I'll put that together.

Paula: Hopefully, because I meant to ask Abe for the longest time, but I just could never remember.

Tony: Oh yeah, Abe's got some stuff.

Paula: But I just, I haven't heard from in awhile so you know.

Michelle: Let me look at yours because I'm looking for a question.

Paula: They're the same ones.

Michelle: I know, I lost a page.

Paula: Oh.

Michelle: And…you guys shouldn't have let me visit the bartender before we did this.

Tony: Ohhhhhhh.

Paula: Do you have any advice for anyone starting out on guitar?
Tony: Practice. Practice. Practice.

Paula: There ya go.  Oh yeah, did we ask this one?

Michelle: No.

Paula: Now that you guys are all in the studio, what do you do when you're tired of hanging around the same 3 people all day?  Like how do you find your own space?
Tony: Oh our studio is right behind this park, so I'll just take a walk over to the park and go on the swings.  It's a really cool situation.

Michelle: Do you watch TV, a lot?
Tony: I watch CNN like crazy, I'm like madly into it.

Michelle: I sure would like to know, do you watch "The Osbournes"?
Tony: You know, it's hard not to like that show.  I don't know what it is, you know I've met Ozzy…

Paula: You met Ozzy?
Tony: Yeah I had drinks with Ozzy.

Paula: I just can't, I don't know, I just don't watch MTV.

Tony: It's funny, man.

Michelle: You know I think everybody should watch it once.

Paula: I think now I just might have to watch it once.

Tony: You know, really, truly, that's probably the last thing I've seen outside of just watching news that I've thought was even interesting.

Michelle: I don't watch the news as much, like I used to watch CNN and MSNBC, but like, I can't.

Tony: Yeah, see I'm kind of a serious guy, except when I get a little loaded.  I'm too serious, all I do is watch TV, read newspapers and I try to analyze and look at you know, situations.

Paula: Totally different topic, do people recognize you on the street?  Do you feel like it's an invasion of your privacy?

Tony: Sometimes people do, but they're usually fans, hardcore fans, and it's cool.  It's not a drag.
Paula: I think that'd be cool.  I don't know, I think we pretty much asked everything on here.

Tony: Right on.  Well, thank you guys.  You guys rock.
